What first interested you in arm wrestling? The strength aspect of it where I was always so small…this gave me the chance to step up and show size didn’t matter.
Where was your first tournament? My first unofficial tournament was in high school in New Germany where Perry Bruhm hosted it. My first official tournament would be the Provincials in 2000.
How did you do? I placed 3rd left handed and 5th right handed.
What do you do for training? Weights, Static holds, Grip exercises, Diet, TABLE TIME
Why do you keep competing? The challenge is always why I compete. It is a healthy way to live. I have met great friends along my career so far, who I will always remember, so there are 2 reasons.
How much longer will you continue to compete? I will compete until I can’t. Dedication is the key in this sport and if you stick with it, it only gets better.
What has been your most memorable moment? My most memorable moment was when I won my first national title. Having Trever Wheatherbee in my class along with Maksim Khodu was very challenging as both are top athletes and made it more memorable as it was my first win against Trever.
Who do you look forward to competing against and why? I look forward to competing with everyone. Everybody can be beaten at any given time. You can only get better by understanding how you lost and build from that. The more you pull the better you will become. It doesn’t matter who you arm wrestle, get out and “support the sport.”
Who and where were your favorite matches? I like armwrestling people who train really hard. One person in mind is Brendan Samuel. He has come along way and has my provincial title in his sites. Another is Rejain Allain. Another great arm wrestler who is proving how much training pays off. Of course my favorite matches are the ones I win, but I love them all.
What are your favorite tournaments and why? I really enjoy Middleton, Provincials, Nationals, and of course the World’s. All have great people and great matches.
Who do you look up to and why? I look up to the older crowd that have dedicated there time and knowledge to this sport and introduce it to the kids. This is our future. If the veterans of this sport like Rick Pinkney, Scott Maccinnis(spelled), and Chris Scott just to name a few, were not here…who would step up and take there place. Those are big shoes to fill.
Who has been your greatest influence and why? My greatest influence I would have to say is my wife….and now my son….If I did not have there support this would be just a dream for me….I have seen a lot of potential leave arm wrestling because of the lack of support at home so I applaud her in putting up with my #$%^….
To what do you attribute your success? I have worked hard to get where I am today…I train everyday and concentrate on this sport a great deal. I would have to owe it to my dedication. If you don’t know what dedication is…try lifting weights at sea with 30ft waves to get ready for a tourney…..its not fun, but its worth it.
What do you need to move up to next level? I need to hit more international tournaments. This is where you learn…from hitting the tables with different techniques and taking that info home to your club and showing them….Working on my weaknesses more is a key.
What are your expectations for the next 2 years? The next 5 years? If I keep my training up…I would like to win my 5th straight provincial title and my 7th National title. In 5 years I want the podium at the Worlds.
How do you see the future of arm wrestling? Progressing. It is only going to get better.
What changes to the sport would you like to see? More sponsorship for teams as opposed to individual sponsors. I would like to see full teams go to the worlds instead of the lucky few
What do you dislike about arm wrestling? Not enough tournaments…….
