What first interested you in arm wrestling? I thought that I was good at it. I was wrong.
Where was your first tournament? Mark's Work Wearhouse, Edmonton, Alberta. March 1981.
How did you do? 2 up & 2 down.
What do you do for training? Gym time, pulley system and table time.
Why do you keep competing? The people I keep meeting are the best. Also the competition - love competing. It also forces me to stay in shape.
How much longer will you continue to compete? Until the body won't let me anymore.
What has been your most memorable moment? 1999 Nationals - Watching everyone do so well. Also the 1998 Worlds - finishing second to Mike Barrett of Manitoba. Canada - First & Second.
Who do you look forward to competing against and why? Mike Barrett. We've been having great battles for over 15 years through several weight classes.
Who and where were your favorite matches? Warren Latimer and I had many a tough match. He was so fast and so strong. Also the 1993 National Sit-downs when Mike Barrett came back from the "B" side and beat me twice in two grueling matches.
What are your favorite tournaments and why? The Nationals and World Championships. The competition at these tournaments is just great.
Who do you look up to and why? Tony Senger. Tony was there in the beginning to help me get started, and he is still going strong.
Who has been your greatest influence and why? John Miazdzyk - I learned not only how to arm wrestle, but also how to referee, and how to run a tournament from John.
To what do you attribute your success? Hard work, and a lot of people who unselfishly taught me how to be a better arm wrestler.
What do you need to move up to next level? More hand and wrist strength.
What are your expectations for the next 2 years? The next 5 years? A National Title in two years, and a World Championship in the next 5 years would be awesome. Provincially, I would like to win the Provincial Super Heavyweight and Overall titles.
How do you see the future of arm wrestling? Slow steady growth. Every body wants this major break, but if we can keep growing, everything will fall into place. We need to start pushing kids tournaments. Kids are the future, so we have to start them early. If we get them hooked at 12 - 14 years old, we'll have a great future. We also need to recognize that any changes we make are for the betterment of the sport in the long run. Long term goals need to be established, but at the same time realize that changes may be necessary to attain these goals.
What changes to the sport would you like to see? A corporate sponsor to come on board and help us progress into television.
What do you dislike about arm wrestling? Not being able to make more tournaments across Canada and Internationally.
