Training - The Shoulder Roll

The shoulder roll is a very difficult move to perfect. Speed is of the utmost importance when using this move. Do not try this move until you have perfected it at practice. Trying to use this move without sufficient practice can lead to serious injury.

The problems most shoulder rollers run into is that they lose their wrist when they come inside or their shoulder goes across centre. You must be able to turn opponent's hand while driving your shoulder behind your hand. Turning your opponent's wrist with this move is very similar to that of a hook. The main exception is that you need to have your shoulder behind your hand as well as turing the wrist.

The most important part of this move is getting your shoulder behind your hand. If it is parallel to or in front of your hand you will be in Break-Arm Position. Never continue to pull if you find yourself in these positions. Give this match away and save your arm for your next opponent.

This move works great on a person that hooks. Where the hooker is only using their arm the shoulder roller is using their entire upper body. Also the shoulder roller is usually faster.

The Hook

Top Roll

shoulder roll 1
You can see how Mark (on right) has his shoulder behind his hand and has turned Randy's wrist. Every part of his upper body stays "locked" as his shoulder will now be the force to drive his opponent to the pin pad.

shoulder roll 2
This is a great shot at how to finish. There is distance between the shoulder and hand and the shoulder is over top of the hands as the shoulder powers to the pin line.

shoulder roll 3
This is the position (on left) that you get into when you fail to turn your opponent's hand. You lose your wrist which makes it very difficult to pin your opponent.
